Faculty Resources at the Library

This guide provides an overview of Mt.SAC Library services and resources for faculty.

Class Set

The Library offers a Class Set service to help faculty provide students with access to required course materials for the semester. Below is everything you need to know before requesting this service.

What is a Class Set?

A Class Set is a collection of physical course materials—such as textbooks, books, or readings—that the instructor or their department provides to the Library. The Library then makes these materials available for students to borrow for the entire semester.

How to Request a Class Set

  1. Contact your librarian liaison to start the process.
  2. Review and sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which outlines responsibilities and conditions.
Amendments can be discussed and agreed upon.

Faculty Responsibilities

  • Submit materials at least 21 business days before the semester begins for guaranteed availability.
  • Understand that:
    • The Library does not charge students for lost or damaged items.
    • The Library does not verify course enrollment or place registration holds.
    • Lost or damaged items are the department’s responsibility to replace.
  • Space is limited—Class Sets are stored in the Periodicals Room.

What Happens After You Deliver Materials

Library staff will:

  • Catalog items in the Library system.
  • Add them to the Class Sets collection and your course Reading List.
  • Label and store them in the Periodicals Room.

Important Policies

  • Checkout period: Students borrow items until the end of the semester.
  • Unused sets: If a set is unused for 1 year, the department will be notified. After 3 months, items may be considered abandoned.
  • Capacity limits: If shelves are full, we cannot accept additional sets.
