Finding Articles at Mt. SAC

Helpful Hints!

Refine your topic by searching meaningful keywords and/or subject headings.  The following search techniques might help:

Boolean operators

  • Use AND, OR, NOT to combine your keywords and subject headings.
  • AND and NOT will narrow (refine) your search.
  • OR will broaden (expand) your search.

Quotation marks

  • To narrow your search, enclose your phrases in "quotation marks".

Truncation

  • To expand your search , truncation will search for different variations of your word.  Most databases use * for truncation.

Some examples follow:

  • physicians and serial murder* (Note: murder* will find murders or murderers)
  • BTK not reviews
  • attica and (prison or riots)
  • "college teachers" and (fraud or plagiarism)
