Citing Your Sources

For help with citing books and articles check out the Library's handout, MLA Style Guideline.

For citing works of visual art use the following format:

Artist Last Name, First Name. Name of Artwork. Year of creation, Medium of Composition. Name of Museum, Location of Museum.

Two examples are provided below:

Isidora. Mummy Portrait of a Woman. AD 100-110, linen, pigment, and gold, ecaustic on wood, Getty Villa, Malibu.

Foggini, Giovannie Battista. Dancing Faun. 1700, bronze, Getty Center, Los Angeles.

Searching Online Resources

When searching online resources, it is recommended that you search approximately 2 - 3 keywords or subject headings.  You combine them with search operators, such as AND and OR.  A few examples follow below:

  • "song dynasty" and painting
  • warhol and "pop art" and society
  • graffiti or "street art"

You can search for your terminology as a keyword or across the complete text of the document.  If you wish to search a specific subject heading, be sure to check the database's thesaurus first.
