Searching Databases

Here are the recommended databases for your class

Searching for Online Resources

When searching electronic resources, like databases, it is recommended that you search approximately 2 - 3 keywords or subject headings.  You combine them with search operators, such as AND, OR and NOT.  Here are a few examples:

  • "coastal communities" AND sea
  • Hurricane* AND "climate change" AND United States
  • oil spills not cooking

Search tips:

  • Use both basic & advanced search functions
  • Try Boolean searching (look at the search operator examples above)
  • Maximize the database tools (email tool or creating a folder tool)
  • Track the word combinations you use in searches
