What Is Zoom?

Zoom is a cloud-based video conferencing service you can use to virtually meet with others - either by video or audio or both. Your instructors will be using Zoom to meet with you online.

As a student, you can use your own Zoom account to meet outside of a regular classroom. Try using Zoom to...

  • Meet with group members for projects and assignments
  • Work on homework with classmates
  • Record a presentation
  • Schedule online tutoring
  • Host a meeting for a club or organization

Recommend Equipment

The following equipment is recommended for participating in Zoom meetings.

  1. Internet Connection: Wired, wireless, or 4G/LTE
  2. Headphones: Listen to the audio being sent through the meeting
  3. Microphone: Speak with other meeting attendees
  4. Webcam:  Meet face-to-face, even when separated (optional)

Supported Operating Systems

Zoom software is supported on a variety of platforms including: 

  • Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10
  • MacOS 10.7 or later
  • ChromeOS (Chromebooks)
  • Android, iOS and iPadOS
  • Linux

Tips for Participating in Online Learning

Helpful tips for students success online:

  • Make sure you’re muted when not talking
  • Be yourself and respect others
  • Ask questions using chat
  • Use reactions to engage with your class
  • Think before you write
  • Utilize the raise your hand feature if wanting to ask a question live
  • Set up an intentional space where the class is going to happen

Zoom Software

Note: Please make sure that you are using the latest version of Zoom. Your computer should update to the latest version automatically but check weekly to make are you are up-to-date.

You will not be able to participate in class sessions unless you have upgraded to at least version 5.0.

How Will I Know if My Instructor is Using Zoom?

Option 1: Your instructor might send you an email inviting you to join a Zoom meeting. This email will include a Zoom Invite Link, a Meeting ID and potentially a password.

Option 2:  Your instructor might post the link in MyCanvas making it easy for you to click to join the meeting. Make sure you are ready with the software installed.
