Generative AI

This guide will help you gain basic information about generative artificial intelligence (AI), if considering using AI in your academic work.

AI & Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a core value in higher education that involves honesty, responsibility, and fairness in all academic work. With the increasing use of AI tools in academic settings, questions have emerged about what constitutes cheating when these tools are involved. To avoid misunderstandings, you must consult with your professor or collaborators before using any AI tools in your assignments.

Using generative AI inappropriately can result in a violation of the standards of conduct policy. Please review Mt. SAC's policies and procedures, especially Administrative Procedure 4290: Student Academic Integrity, to fully understand what Academic Integrity means and avoid any unnecessary disciplinary measures.

Mt. SAC Policy

Currently, Mt. SAC does not have a college-wide policy regarding the use of generative AI tools for coursework or research.

Each instructor may set their own guidelines for how these tools can be used. When in doubt, ask your professor—never assume that AI use is permitted.

Environmental Impact

The use of generative AI has a very serious environmental cost due to the amount of resources, such as power, required for operation and maintenance of these systems. To learn more, check out the resources below:
